The 6 employees of the Traffic Police Division of the Chisinau General Police Commissariat (GPC) were taken into custody for 72 hours. They are suspected of power abuse, influence trafficking, and passive and active corruption. Additionally, the Anticorruption Prosecution Office announced on Friday, August 24, that there has been an information leak, before the policemen’s apprehension. Prosecutors ordered the opening of a criminal file, on the charge of obstructing the exercise of justice and criminal pursuit by using the employment position, reports Info-Prim Neo. Acting Head of Anticorruption Prosecution Viorel Morari stated at a press conference that, when mobile groups were rounded and dispatched to the search destination, the policemen were already aware of the prosecutors’ actions. 35 searches were made overall, including the work offices of the suspects, the work parking lot and service vehicles, at their homes and personal vehicles. The searches found blank minute forms, one radar, blood alcohol content tests that were not under the monitoring of the police station, but were used by its employees. Money was found in one vehicle, namely 7,000 lei. It is assumed that the suspects took money from drivers in order not to open files on their names for driving under influence or other violations. Among the 6 suspects is the Deputy Chief of GCP’s Traffic Police Division. The policemen risk fines up to 3,000 conventional units or up to 10 years in jail, if found guilty. The person who leaked the information may get a fine of 400 to 600 conventional units or up to 4 years in jail, in both cases with the privation of rights to occupy certain positions or undertake certain activities for a term of up to 3 years. Viorel Morari said that the investigations started on March 23, 2012, as a result of a complaint from a citizen, and employees of MoI’s Internal Security Division also took part in the investigation.
