The Edinet Town Court sentenced a 22-year-old man to 13 years in jail for burgling the homes of two women aged 62 and 73 from Burlănești village the same evening. He raped one of the two women, threatening her with a knife, and mistreated the other one. He aimed to steal money, but could not find some and left with several low-value items, IPN reports.

The Procurator General’s Office said the man is from Ungheni town, but cohabited with a woman from the village where he committed the offence.

In 2014, the young man committed a theft, but reached an amicable settlement with the victims. In 2015, he was held for four months for breaking into a house. Shortly after being set free, he committed another theft and a rape and served three years in a minors’ jail.

He had been under arrest since July. Prosecutors will challenge the sentence as too lenient.
