The World Bank will offer the Republic of Moldova €24.8 million in additional financing in loans for ensuring the vaccination of the population against COVID-19. The MPs gave a first reading to the bill to ratify the financing agreement between the Republic of Moldova and the International Development Association concerning the Emergency COVID-19 Response Project – additional financing, IPN reports.

Under the agreement, the money will be used to purchase vaccine doses, to invest in cold storage facilities, to develop information systems in the health sector, to manage medical waste and to provide technical assistance in strengthening the capacities for conducting the vaccination process.

The Republic of Moldova will be able to purchase vaccines from different sources, including directly from producers or through the agency of the COVAX Facility and from other states that have additional vaccine stores.

Minister of Health Ala Nemerenco said in Parliament that the loan will be repaid in the period between September 15, 2026 and March 15, 2046. The payable sum of this loan in percentage is 1.65%. As from September 15, 2046 until March 15, 2051, this will represent 3.4%.

The financing agreement with IDA on the implementation of the Emergency COVID-19 Response Project was signed by President Maia Sandu on August 9, 2021. It will take effect when it is ratified by Parliament and when the World Bank is informed about the performance of all the internal legal procedures. The agreement implementation deadline is April 30, 2023.
