Thirty-one years have passed since the start of the battles for defending the independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova. On March 2, commemoration events are held in Chisinau and in other localities of the country. President Maia Sandu, supreme commander of the armed forces, said that the war of 1992, with the Russian army and the troops of mercenaries who accompanied it, was unjust and unequal, IPN reports.

In the event staged at the “Grieving Mother” Monument in Chisinau, President Sandu said that those who fought for the independence of the country, who sacrificed their youth, health and even life, are commemorated today. “We stand by the relatives of the heroes, their older parents, their widows and children, by those who lost dear people in the Nistru war. In 31 years of the start of that war, the sacrifice of those who died in the battles on the Nistru is not forgotten. The struggle of the ordinary people, police officers, volunteers and combatants for defending Moldova’s independence is not forgotten. On the Memory and Gratitude Day, we undertake to never forget the enormous price paid by the heroes killed in battle, the veterans, their families,” stated the official.

According to her, no one wanted that war that came as a scourge. “We didn’t want it then and do not want it now too. We are a peaceful nation. We build a state in which there is place for everyone. Our efforts are now aimed at the unity of all the citizens, no matter on what side of the Nistru River we live. We have yet to work so as to fix the rupture that widened during the battles of 1992, but during these years we have maintained peace in our country. We want to live in peace,” stated Maia Sandu.

“The recollections of the first war day continue to mark us in 31 years of that moment. In these tumultuous times, the memories of the losses sustained in battles on the Nistru are even more painful,” said Minister of Home Affairs Ana Revenco. According to her, the memory of those sacrifices should now generate vigilance and care for the citizens, for social stability and the country’s security so that no threats, aggression and divisions are allowed.

The Nistru war involved about 30,000 Moldovans. More than 300 combatants and over 400 civilians died in those battles, while several hundreds were injured. The ceasefire agreement was signed on July 21, 1992 by the Republic of Moldova and the Russian Federation.
