41% of the population of Moldova drinks water that does not meet the sanitary norms. Dumitru Sereteanu, the head of the State Public Health Supervision Service, has told Info-Prim Neo that the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Health plan to take a series of water pollution prevention measures so as to reduce the percentage of water unfit for consumption to 32% by 2015.
The water sources in Moldova are distributed unevenly. The sanitary examination of the quality of drinking water showed that it is substandard in underground sources and distribution systems. The water in the underground centralized sources and urban public water pipes contains an increasing number of chemicals and bacteria. The towns Nisporeni, Straseni, Hancesti, Causeni, Telenesti, Falesti, and Donduseni are the most affected. The water supplied to institutions for children is also of a poor quality.
The Ministry of Health recommends the public medical-sanitary institutions to become involved in campaigns to raise awareness of the seriousness of the problem. A grownup needs about two liters of water a day for physical needs. A person can use up to 100 liters daily for other purposes.
In 2010, 43% of the population did not have access to drinking water.
