About 50% of the money collected as road taxes will be transferred directly to the budgets of the local public authorities. Minister of Transport and Road Infrastructure Iurie Cirimciuc said the money will be distributed according to the number of inhabitants, about 120 lei per resident. This will be used to rehabilitate and build roads in villages, IPN reports.
Besides the road tax, the road fund includes the excise duties on oil products and fines imposed on motorists who break traffic rules. The roads of district importance will be rehabilitated with money from the road fund.
Earlier this week, the Cabinet approved the updated list of national and local roads that are in need of repair.
