More than 500 surveillance cameras will be installed on the streets of Chisinau until November. The head of the Traffic Police Department Sergiu Armasu told a news conference that the move is aimed at monitoring traffic and maintaining public order, Info-Prim Neo reports. The video cameras to the value of US$2.7 million will be provided by China. Under the project, the grant may be extended to US$3.6 million, depending on the needs. The over 500 cameras will be placed at crossroads with traffic lights and 180 intersections without traffic lights, and near 60 schools, 17 universities and 27 kindergartens. The pictures will be monitored by a common command center that will be opened at the Ministry of the Interior or the Traffic Police. “The cameras will be set up in the places where the incidence of road accidents is higher. They will also help to maintain public order. We hope the number of thefts will reduce. Corruption will also diminish as the human factor in imposing penalties will be excluded,” said Minister of the Interior Alexei Roibu. The 500 road accidents that happened on the national roads so far this year resulted in 58 deaths and 300 persons injured.
