As many as 1.4 million people or 51.2% of the voters included in the electoral register have cast their ballots by 6:30pm, IPN reports.
The president of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Iurie Ciocan said the highest voter turnout was recorded in Rezina (56%) and Criuleni (55.87%). In the municipality of Chisinau, the voter turnout was 55.7%. The lowest voter turnout was in Basarabeasca, where only 39.24% of the people on the voter rolls voted by 6:30pm.
More than 40,000 Moldovans voted abroad by 6pm. Most of them voted in Italy (18,000), Russia (7,000), and Romania (6,200).
The polling places are open by 9pm.
