About 80% of the high caliber ammunitions in Moldova are past their shelf life and will be disposed of. However, Moldova lacks the funds for these operations, informed the secretary of the Supreme Security Council and presidential counselor on national security and defense Alexei Barbaneagra, Info-Prim Neo reports.
On Monday’s meeting the Council adopted a plan of actions to reform national security “We discussed about the shelf life of stored ammunition. We examined this problem because stockpiles in urban areas are a threat to the people. We must take these ammunition stockpiles outside the cities”, said Alexei Barbaneagra.
Nearly all the high caliber ammunition was bought during the Soviet era and most of it is past its shelf life. “The Minister of Defense promised he would push for the munitions that are a threat to people and army to be destroyed in 2013. We have some international programs that can fund these operations”, said Alexei Barbaneagra. Currently, there is an ongoing collaboration with a Norwegian NGO and negotiations are underway with OSCE regarding the construction of an ammunition storehouse.
