Approximately 160 grownups and 60 children suffer from hemophilia in Moldova. In a press release issued on the occasion of World Hemophilia Day, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection said the necessary treatment is administered to patients free, being bought with centralized funds earmarked by the state, IPN reports.
Hemophilia is a genetic deficiency in clotting factor VIII, which causes increased bleeding and usually affects males. In the majority of cases it is inherited as an X-linked recessive trait, though there are cases which arise from spontaneous mutations. Factor VIII medication may be used to treat and prevent bleeding in people with hemophilia.
Globally, there are almost 7 million people who suffer from bleeding disorders, with 75% of these not being aware of this. This year’s theme for World Hemophilia Day is “Sharing Knowledge Makes Us Stronger”. The measures are aimed at raising awareness and at offering diagnosis possibilities and access to treatment.
World Hemophilia Day has been celebrated since 1989. April 17 was chosen in honor of the founder of the World Federation of Hemophilia Frank Schnabel, a Montreal businessman born with severe hemophilia A on this day.
