Approximately 40% of the citizens consider that the Republic of Moldova should have two official languages, shows the last Public Opinion Barometer. Arcadie Barbarosie, the head of the Public Policy Institute that commissioned the poll, said that this percentage is significant.
“We cannot say that these persons are members of only other ethnic groups. The data show the Moldovan Romanians also consider there should be two official languages in Moldova,” Arcadie Barbarosie said.
Asked how many official languages Moldova should have, 57.4% of the respondents said only one, while 38.3% said there should be two. The others either could not give an answer (3%) or believe that Moldova should have more official languages (1.3%).
The poll was carried out by the Marketing and Polling Institute IMAS-INC Chisinau during October 17 – November 7. It covered a sample of 1,104 persons. The margin of sampling error is +3%.
