{Article of the series “Year 2012: figures and facts”} [– January 4:] A man was killed and 16 were injured after a bus running on route overturned in Beloci village in the Transnistrian region. At a turn from a local road to the national road, the bus skidded on ice and turned over on the opposite lane. [– January 22:] Seven minors were hospitalized as a result of a road accident that happened in Drochia district. The 17-year-old driver, who didn’t have a driver’s license, lost control of the car, which overturned. [– January 24:] A brother and a sister from Seliste, Nisporeni died from carbon monoxide poisoning. When the fire started, there were three children in the house. They were left in the care of the daughter of their neighbors. She managed to save only one child. [– February 2:] A couple and their 15-year-old daughter were found dead in their house in Balti. According to the preliminary inquiries, the family got poisoned with carbon monoxide emitted by the faulty stove.  [– February 8:] Weather forecasters issued an orange code advisory in connection with the falling of temperatures to minus 27 degrees Celsius. SA Apa-Canal Chisinau announced that about 1,000 branch pipes got frozen and many people remained without water. [– February 11:] A red code advisory for sharp frost was issued for some of the northern districts of Moldova. Nighttime temperatures dropped to minus 31 degrees Celsius. [– February 12:] Two children of 2 and 3 and their grandmother aged 50 were fatally struck by a car driven by a 32-year-old man in Volentiri, Stefan Voda. [– February 14:] A fire started at the glass factory located in Chisinau’s Ciocana district. Eight firefighting vehicles have struggled to contain the blaze for about an hour. According to the firefighters, the fire broke out after raw material poured out of a glass processing stove. [– March 5:] A bus with passengers running on the Chisinau – Gratiesti road overturned in a ditch. Eight of the about 40 passengers were taken to the hospital. [– March 19:] Two children aged 8 and 10 and their mother of 29 died in a large fire in Micauti, Straseni. [– March 19:] The level of solid suspensions (dust) in the air exceeded the norms. The State Hydrometeorology Service recommended the authorities and the people to wash the streets with water. [– April 3:] A large fire near Grenoble St in Chisinau, not far from the former head office of the State Hydrometeorology Service destroyed about one hectare of dry grass. The dense smoke reached the residential sector. The people living nearby presumed that the fire expanded after individuals set a pile of dry plants on fire. [– April 6:] A great fire destroyed the largest part of the roof of an annex of the restaurant “Wedding House”. Nobody was hurt. [– May 12-15:] The torrential rain with hail damaged dozens of hectares of crops in a number of settlements in four districts of the country.   [– May 20:] Many trees were downed and dozens of branches were broken as a result of the torrential rain that fell in Chisinau. The basements and apartments in some of the districts were flooded. [– May 22:] Six houses were destroyed by fire in Ivanovca village of Floresti district. The building where there was the library, the gymnasium, the workshops hall and the eatery of the local secondary school caught fire the next day. The police presumed it was an arson attack. [– May 29:] Sixteen persons were rushed to the hospital with injuries that they sustained in a serious traffic accident that happened at the intersection of the streets Mihail Kogalniceanu and Mihai Eminescu. Two of them were admitted to the reanimatology section. A minibus running on route No.110 collided with a car and then overturned.  [– June 1 – July 4] The average temperature had been by 3-4°C higher than the norm. The temperatures hit a record level for the last 60 years. [– June 1:] Six persons died, while another six were admitted to the Chisinau Emergency Hospital in a serious condition as a result of a road accident that happened near the lake in Danceni, Ialoveni. A minibus with 21 passengers on collided with a truck.  [– June 10:] Eight persons drowned in the country during a day, one of whom an underage boy. In most of the cases, the adults went to swim while under the influence.  [– June 14:] A man and a two-year-old girl died, while another man and a child aged six were hurt in a car accident that happened on the Telenesti – Cucoaia road in Telenesti district. A Daewoo Rezzo car driven by a man aged 45 went out of control, skidded off the road and overturned.  [– June 20:] Six drownings were recorded during 24 hours. The victims included a boy aged 10 from Zubresti, Straseni.   [– June 28:] The bodies of a woman aged 89 and her son of 54 were found in the debris after a house exploded in Balti. A gas leakage was considered the cause of the blast.  [– July 7:] An earthquake measuring 4.3 degrees on the Richter scale happened in Romania’s Vrancea region. It was felt in Chisinau too.  [– July 8:] Four persons drowned in 24 hours, including a ten-year-old child from Straseni district. [– July 10:]  Eight settlements in the districts of Hancesti, Calarasi, and Nisporeni and the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia remained without power as a result of the heavy rain that also affected 120 hectares of vineyard, 120 hectares of corn and sunflower, and 3.5 hectares of pepper. [–July 12:] A new earthquake measuring 4.3 degrees on the Richter scale occurred in Vrancea. It was again felt in Moldova. [–July 17:] Three young persons aged between 18 and 24 lost their lives in an accident on the Chisinau – Ungheni international road, not far from Romanovka village. There were ten persons in the Volkswagen Pasat car that was allegedly speeding and went out of control. The vehicle turned over for several times in a field by the roadside.  [–July 18:] Eleven passengers, one of whom a two-year-old child, were hospitalized after the minibus running on the Chisinau – Opaci route in which they were traveling crashed violently into a tree. The minibus was driven by a man aged 21, who didn’t have a driver’s license for minibus. [– August 9:] Thirteen persons, including two minors, were killed in a road accident near Moreni, Ungheni. The inebriated driver of a Mercedes-Benz truck running on the Morenii Noi – Ungheni road was blamed for the accident. [–August 18:] Four young people aged between 22 and 32 died in a road accident in Comrat town. The fifth passenger aged 21 escaped death. The five persons traveled by a BMW car, which ran into a tree. [–August 21:] Three people died and another person was hurt in a car accident on the M3 road in Ukraine. All the occupants were from Straseni district. Allegedly, the driver fell asleep and the car left the road and overturned.  [–August 29:] Three young men from Susleni, Orhei died in a road accident near the village. Another two passengers were taken to the hospital. The 23-year-old driver lost control of a Nissan car, which went out of control and went into a tree. [–September 2:] Three persons were killed and two persons were hurt when the car in which they traveled went out of control and crashed into a tree in Abaclia, Basarabeasca.  [–September 21:] A minibus running on route No. 192 in Chisinau, with 14 persons inside, crashed into a tree at the intersection of the streets Tighina and Alexei Mateevici. One person was taken to the hospital with a concussion and brain injury. The other passengers suffered minor injuries. [–September 28:] A house situated on Vasile Lupu St in Chisinau’s Buiucani district burned practically to the ground in a fire. The 49-year-old owner was found dead in the debris. Another house located in the vicinity was damaged partially. [–October 5:] Three people in a trailer towed by a tractor were killed and one was injured after the vehicle turned over near the village Colibas of Cahul district. Eight other people escaped unharmed. The people were returning from work in the fields when the left wheel of the trailer detached, causing it to turn over. [–October 9:] A minibus carrying 11 Moldovan nationals was involved in a traffic accident on the Kiev-Odessa road in Ukraine. A car crossed the centerline and collided with the Moldovans’ minibus. None of the Moldovans was injured badly. [–October 24:] Four people were killed and two others were injured after a minibus impacted violently with a tractor plow. The accident occurred at the exit from the village of Paladea, Ocnita district. The driver of the minibus that carried the six passengers was blinded by the lights of a tractor. [- October 25:] Two sisters, 11 and 14, were found dead in their home in a Straseni district village. Their bodies were discovered by relatives. The girls' parents were working abroad and left the sisters in the relatives’ care. [–October 31:] A restaurant at the Sun City mall located on a bridge over Pushkin Street in downtown Chisinau went ablaze. Seven firefighting vehicles were deployed to put out the flames. [–November 4:] Four people were killed and six others were injured after the minibus they were on was struck by a freight train near Merenii Noi in Anenii Noi district. The minibus driver ignored the red light at the junction with the tracks. The minibus was taking guests back home from a wedding in Mereni village. [–November 13:] Five passengers were hurt in an accident that involved a minibus on route No. 127 in Chisinau. The minibus was struck at the junction of the streets Mihai Eminescu and Alexandru Bernardazzi by a car whose driver failed to give way.   [–November 17:] Five people, including two children, died after the minibus they were in collided with a truck on Brest-Odesa road near the bridge in Parlita village. The driver lost control of the wheel because of the silver thaw on the road. The car skidded, crossed the centerline and collided with a truck.  [–November 23:] Two people died after a cargo train struck a car at a level crossing in Calarasi district. The car driver attempted to cross the junction ignoring both the red light and a queue of 12 cars before him at the intersection. [– December 10-17:] Weather forecasters issued a yellow code advisory for difficult weather conditions all over the country. The southern cyclone that crossed the country brought precipitation, mainly in the form of snow, in most parts of Moldova. The wind intensified to 70 km/s. A number of suburban routes in northern Moldova were suspended. Dozens of schools and kindergartens were closed. [–December 28:] Three people died and another 22 were hurt when the minibuses in which they were traveling collided head-on between the villages Bozieni and Gura Galbenei in Hancesti districts. Both of the minibuses run on routes – Basarabeasca-Chisinau route, and Taraclia – Chisinau route. Supposedly, one of the drivers attempted to overtake a car without making sure that it was safe.
