The ruling alliance will try to continuously postpone the presidential elections, considers Communist lawmaker Sergiu Sarbu. He told Info-Prim Neo that the Communist parliamentary group will put forward a bill concerning the setting of the date of rerun elections in Parliament. “The ambitions of the AEI leaders to become President became so strong that they endanger Moldova’s stability. The country goes towards early legislative elections because of them. In such circumstances, when everyone wants to become head of state and the ambitions are exaggerated, the ruling alliance tries to constantly postpone the procedure for electing the President. This is nothing else but an attempt to usurp the power in the state,” said Sergiu Sarbu. The bill that the PCRM intends to submit envisions setting the date of rerun elections within 30 days. The legislation does not clearly say what steps should be taken when no candidate for the presidency is registered and the lawmakers of the ruling alliance profit from this legislative shortcoming, said Sergiu Sarbu. “The procedure for electing the head of state was initiated. It cannot be put off or annulled. We consider there should be fixed a date for rerun elections. If the head of state is not elected in them, the legislative body is to be dissolved. If they use another scenario, it will be usurpation of the power and we reserve the right to take action so as not to allow usurping the power in the state,” said the MP. According to Sergiu Sarbu, the PCRM has fielded no candidate for the presidency because it knew that the AEI will not support this candidate. “We did not want to put the candidate in an unpleasant situation. The alliance has all the necessary votes and can assume overall responsibility so as to overcome the crisis. We do not want to take part in this game of the ruling alliance,” he stated. The deadline for submitting applications for being registered as candidates for the presidency was November 14, 24.00. No candidate was registered and the elections set for November 18 will thus not take place. Parliament is to set a new date for the presidential elections.
