The public servants in Moldova benefit from professional development courses in different areas, not yet from language proficiency courses, even if they need such courses. There is a free distance learning program for studying the Romanian language, but it is intended only for those who already know Romanian, director of the National Association of European Trainers of Moldova (ANTEM) Lucia Cucu stated in an interview for Radio Free Europe, quoted by IPN.
According to her, specialists from different areas realized that they cannot work if they do not know the official language of the state. The small salary is an obstacle to learning Romanian as this does not enable the employees to pay for courses.
“We have free courses, but these are designed for a limited number of employees. In 2016, we had requests from 5,000 people, but we could engage only 300 persons in the free program. The other 4,700 people could not be involved as we didn’t have money to organize free courses for them,” stated Lucia Cucu.
According to her, the state should become involved and create the necessary conditions so that all those who want could study the Romanian language.
