Moldovan footballer Alexandru Antoniuc and assistant coach Alexandru Matiura are close to Champions League football, after Rubin Kazan have reached the last qualifying round. On Wednesday, August 3, the Russian outfit won the second leg against Dinamo Kiev 2-1. Antoniuc didn’t get to play in this match. The first leg had been won by Rubin 2-0. The former Russian champions played in the CL Groups last year, but Antoniuc wasn’t eligible for the competition then. This season, the 22 year old was included in the official list. On Friday, August 5, Rubin will draw their next opponents. Meanwhile, another Moldovan player, Denis Zmeu, exited the competition after his side, FC Vaslui, have been eliminated by Netherlands’ Twente on aggregate score 2-0. Zmeu didn’t play in the two legs. Despite the defeat, Vaslui will continue to play in the Europa League. One Moldovan who will certainly play in the Champions League is Alexandru Spiridon, assistant coach at Shakhtar Donetsk.
