The National Archeological Agency recommends conserving and restoring the portions of the historical cobbles pavement discovered on August 31 St in Chisinau, between Alexandr Pushkin and Mitropolit Gavriil Bănulescu-Bodoni streets, and reconstructing the lost portions of pavement with similar cobbles from other sections of 31 august 1989 St or from the historical nucleus of the city, IPN reports.
During March 21 – April 3, the Agency carried out archeological research on the cobbles pavement from 31 august 1989 St, with the works being financed by the General Urban Mobility Division of Chisinau. At the end of examinations, a preliminary technical-scientific repot was presented to the Ministry of Culture and the aforementioned Division.
“It is noteworthy that this street of Chisinau was paved with granite cobbles back in 1869-1870, being one of the first streets in the city that benefitted from such paving. According to documents of the National Archive of the Republic of Moldova, the section of 31 august 1989 St between the streets Alexandr Pushkin and Mitropolit Gavriil Bănulescu-Bodoni was paved in the period, while the other sections of the street were paved during the next decades. It is fascinating to see how we can learn more about the history of those streets and the city in general by archeological research,” noted the National Archeological Agency.
According to the archeologists, the section between the streets Alexandr Pushkin and Mitropolit Gavriil Bănulescu-Bodoni is an area of great cultural and touristic interest as important cultural institutions are located there. The granite paving there dating from the 19th century is in a good state and attracted special interest from the public in urban archeology, the history and cultural heritage of Chisinau.
The cobbles pavement on August 31 St was discovered in March during street rehabilitation works. The municipality said that it is waiting for expert proposals for laying out the street within the financial possibilities of the Chisinau City Hall.
