Four persons, two of whom serve time at Penitentiary No. 17 in Rezina, are suspected of attempt to kidnap a businessman living in Edinet district with the aim of obtaining about €50,000 from relatives through blackmail, IPN reports, quoting the General Police Inspectorate.
The suspects are aged between 24 and 51. The man who was to be kidnapped was also 51. As a result of investigations, it was established that the group was headed by a detainee. This intended to cause fear among businesspeople so as to later impose so-called taxes that were to reach detainees and the group’s common budget.
Kidnapping in Moldova is punished with 10 to 13 years in jail.
