The authorities insist on the necessity of strengthening the National Bank of Moldova and the National Commission for Financial Markets. A number of legislative initiatives to this effect will be put forward in the immediate future. The situation in the financial-banking sector was discussed in the first meeting of the new Supreme Security Council on February 24, IPN reports.

“We discussed the situation in the financial-banking system and the measures that need to be taken to improve it. We ascertained that the situation is under control and the people should not become alarmed. We also established that the National Bank of Moldova and other bodies work in compliance with the law and ensure security,” President Nicolae Timofti told the press.

The head of state also told the journalists that he requested to avoid measures that can led to the violation of the rules in the financial-banking sector and to strictly obey the law. “We analyzed the situation and can say that there are no reasons for the people to get into a panic,” said the head of state.

Prime Minister Pavel Filip said they asked for the Council to be convened. “We considered it necessary to discuss the situation as one of our objectives is to stabilize the financial-banking sector. Nothing serious happened in this area recently and it wasn’t an emergency meeting. It was a planned one. We already went through a bank fraud and it is important to have a systemic approach and not to react with delay,” he stated.

The Premier also said that the Cabinet already approved a number of bills aimed at strengthening the financial-banking system and several other relevant legislative initiatives will be soon proposed.
