The civil defense shelters were brought back into the focus after they had been neglected for many years. The authorities plan to outfit these with the necessary equipment, devices and drinking water reserves. On Wednesday, the Cabinet approved the regulations concerning the exploitation of defense shelters, IPN reports.
According to the Ministry of the Interior, as there is an ongoing armed conflict on the border with Moldova, the necessity of civil defense shelters became more acute and these should be inventoried and assessed.
The civil protection shelters situated in the republic’s municipalities and towns were built in the 1960-80s, usually at state enterprises, and were designed to protect and shelter the largest continuous shifts of employees who worked at the enterprise and the persons from the adjoining areas.
“According to the information presented by the National Inspectorate for Technical Supervision, as a result of the checks performed this year, 198 civil defense shelters have been taken over (5 are protection shelters classified “Restricted”, 19 are demolished shelters, 51 of the 1,754 shelters are privately owner, while the rest are managed by the central and local public authorities) and the civil protection shelters are not fit for sheltering persons,” says the draft decision.
