Over the past decade, the number of teachers aged 30 years and younger has halved, and every 5 years the share of teachers who are 60 years and older increases by 4%, according to economist Veaceslav Ioniță, of the think-tank IDIS Viitorul.

Today the average age of employees in primary and general secondary education is 50 years, while in 2013 it was 46.7.

“The number of teachers has decreased, but the number of children even more”, noted the expert.

From the academic year 2000/2001 to 2023/2024, the number of employees in the education system decreased from 124,400 to 91,400.

Meanwhile, the number of educators in kindergartens has increased. “Whereas in the past only one in three educators had higher education, today 1 in 3 does not have higher education”, noted Ioniță.

Last year, the districts with the highest share of education employees were Cantemir (29.8%), Telenești (29.4%), Nisporeni (28.6%), Sângerei (27.5%) Soldănești (27 %), and the districts with the lowest share of education employees were Orhei (16.1%), Anenii Noi (15.6%), Basarabeasca (13.5%), Bălți Municipality (10.7%) and Chisinau Municipality (9.1%).
