The broadcasters monitored by the Broadcasting Coordination Council (BCC) in the period between June 15 and 28 covered the election campaign more equitably. On July 10, the Council approved the report on the monitoring of 13 TV channels without imposing penalties, IPN reports.
BCC chairman Dinu Ciocan said that compared with the parliamentary elections, things regarding the coverage of the election campaign changed essentially. “We now saw that the broadcasters made effort to cover the campaign prior to the runoff vote in a more equitable way,” he stated.
The members of the BCC expressed yet their indignation at the fact that the penalties imposed earlier on the monitored broadcasters were suspended by court decision. Dinu Ciocan underlined the importance of modifying the method of imposing penalties so as to eliminate the need of instituting penalties gradually. “Until we impose another penalty, the broadcaster manages to suspend the one put earlier. We experience such a situation in every campaign,” stated Dinu Ciocan.
According to him, there are a number of shortcomings in the work of the broadcasters and things should be improved. Therefore, the BCC will stage seminars for broadcasters on sociopolitical pluralism and pluralism of opinions in election campaigns until this yearend.
