This year it is 150 years of the birth of George Cosbuc (1866-2016). On this occasion, the ‘poet of the year 2016’ was brought to Chisinau. In his honor, an exhibition entitled “George Cosbuc – Zamfira’s Wedding” was mounted in the central park of Chisinau, IPN reports.

The exhibits include documents, photographs, the poet’s representative poems, letters, facsimiles and critics’ assessments of the poet’s works and personality. These are presented on 24 banners in the Gallery “La Rond” near the monument to Stephan the Great and Holy.

According to writer Ion Hadarca, the exhibition’s goal is to educate the young generation and to familiarize the public with the bard’s works because George Cosbuc is a spirit from the people’s spirit, a soul from the people’s soul and blood from the people’s blood.

Valeriu Matei, director of the Romanian Cultural Institute “Mihai Eminescu” in Chisinau, said that George Cosbuc contributed to establishing cultural unity and was a great pathfinder, as Eminescu was.

George Cosbuc was a poet, literary critic and translator from Transylvania. He had been an associate member of the Romanian Academy since 1916. Among his most famous works are “We want land”, “El Zorab” and “Zamfirea’s Wedding”.

The exhibit was organized by the Romanian Cultural Institute “Mihai Eminescu” in Chisinau in cooperation with the County Library “George Cosbuc” of Bistrita Nasaud, the Bucharest National Museum of the Romanian Literature, the National Library of the Republic of Moldova and the Chisinau City Hall.

The exhibition will continue until August 15.
