The General Inspectorate for Emergencies has launched a campaign to prevent drownings in the warm period of the year. This will last throughout summer, IPN reports.

A case of drowning with three minor children left unsupervised in a boat in the middle of the lake was simulated at the lake in “Valea Morilor” Park of Chisinau. SMURD employees explained the resuscitation maneuverers and the steps that should be followed. Similar events will be staged near ponds in northern, southern and central Moldova.

Attending the event, head of the General Inspectorate for Emergencies Mihail Harabagiu said the goal of the campaign is to reduce the number of drownings and to warn the people about the risk of swimming in places where there are no rescue stations or the risk of swimming at night. Mihail Harabagiu told those attending that the persons who drank alcohol should not go into the water, while the children should not be left unsupervised while swimming.

According to the data of the General Inspectorate for Emergencies, 3,471 persons drowned in lakes and ponds in Moldova during the past 16 years. These included 571 children. During the last four weeks, four children drowned. Three of these were brothers and died the same day.
