The owners of vehicles who hurried to pay higher taxes for roads will not be able to get the money back. According to a bill passed by Parliament, the new taxes were to take effect on January 1, 2013, but the law didn’t come into force because it wasn’t promulgated by the head of state and wasn’t published in the Official Gazette.
“The people must follow what the central public administration does. The legislative body adopted the law, but it wasn’t published as the President hadn’t promulgated it,” Deputy Minister of Transport and Road Infrastructure Boris Gherasim stated for Info-Prim Neo.
He does not rule out that the car owners were misled when they went to pay the tax. It happened as in the case of the owners of vehicles registered abroad. The law didn’t take effect, but many owners of cars paid the road toll.
Those who paid the higher taxes will not be paid back the difference because the money was already transferred to the State Treasury.
The road tax is calculated depending on the capacity of the vehicle’s engine, starting with 0.4 lei per cubic centimeter. According to the new provisions, the tax for small vehicles will double, while for heavy vehicles, buses and minibuses will rise by 50%.
