Lawyers of “Promo-LEX” Association reported a case of discrimination against a Roma ethnics. A Roma woman was subject to discriminatory treatment and was humiliated by employees of the Buiucani Police Inspectorate, IPN reports.
According to the woman, while shopping she was arrested by two persons, who presented themselves as police officers, for the reason that she corresponded to the profile of an offender: a Roma woman with the hair tied in a loop, with black jacket, 1.60-1.65 m in height. The policemen provided no other details and escorted her to the police station for questioning.
The woman filed a complaint to the Council for Preventing and Eliminating Discrimination and Ensuring Equality, saying she was humiliated by police officers on the grounds of ethnicity without objective reasons. The Council established that the facts stated in the complaint represent a serous form of racial discrimination, according to the Law on Equality of Chances.
The Council’s decision was challenged by the Buiucani Police Inspectorate in court, but the Buiucani Court rejected the Inspectorate’s application.
