“The decision of the Constitutional Court is predictable, expected and leads to the perpetuation of the political crisis because the procedure for electing the head of state will be resumed,” director of the Strategic Research and Political Consultancy Center “Politicon”, political analyst Anatol Taranu stated for Info-Prim Neo.
The analyst believes that more steps will follow this decision. The legislative body will soon set a new date for the presidential elections or may postpone doing this, invoking rationality- or conjuncture-related reasons. “One of the explanations for the postponement may be the necessity of holding a referendum to decrease the number of votes needed to elect the head of state from 61 to 51. The elections may be delayed until the Constitution is amended,” said Anatol Taranu.
He also said that if new elections are held soon, the PCRM may not propose Leonid Talmaci again. “The Communists suggested the candidate without having a preliminary discussion with the parliamentary opposition and without informing the partners. The move was doomed to failure,” said the analyst.
He considers that the Communists pursued other goals when they put forward Leonid Talmaci. “They wanted to put the alliance in an embarrassing situation and to win some points. It was an image move,” said Anatol Taranu.
He also said that Oazu Nantoi may run again in the next elections. But if he does it without holding discussions with the main political players, he does not aim to be elected, but to sensitize the political class.
The Constitutional Court declared the December 16 presidential elections unconstitutional because the secrecy of the vote was infringed. Thus, the January 15 elections will not take place.
