The Center for Combating Corruption and Economic Crime (CCCEC) managed to restore about $500,000 to an important U.S. company that was attacked by a group of international hackers. In a communique quoted by Info-Prim Neo, the Center says that one of the members of the group works for a prestigious bank in Moldova.
The CCCEC finished the investigation into an attempt to misappropriate $498,755 from Arthur B. Myr Industries, Inc. operating in Belleville, Michigan. The company lodged a complaint with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation and the CCCEC, through the agency of the U.S. Embassy in Moldova, asking that they investigate the case and recover the money.
At the request of the CCCEC, the Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted an investigation and identified phishing schemes at Comerica Bank in Michigan. Arthur B.Myr Industries, Inc., which makes and processes aerodynamic solutions and paint, was one of the victims of these schemes. Among its major clients are such U.S. car makers as Ford, Chrysler, GMC and others.
The plant was defrauded of $498,755. This money was transferred to a bank in Moldova, to the account of a private individual who opened it on the instructions of officials of another Moldovan bank and interested persons.
The given person went to a local office of the bank and wanted to withdraw the entire sum in cash. In order to prevent money laundering, the bank examined the given operation and, considering it suspect, informed the CCCEC about it.
The Center arrested the given person and two more persons. One more accomplice is wanted.
The case was sent to the prosecutors, who will remit it to court, while the money was restored to the victim.
