Ceban and Radu would reach runoffs as a result of mayoral elections in Chisinau, poll

If mayoral elections were held in Chisinau municipality next Sunday, 13% of the respondents of an opinion poll would not know who to vote for, while 8% would not go to vote. Consequently, each fifth interviewed person would be unable to make a conscious choice. 27.6% would vote for Ion Ceban (PSRM), while 27.1% for Silvia Radu (independent). Also, 13.2% would vote for Andrei Nastase (PPPDA), 3.8% for Constantin Codreanu (PUN), 2% for Valeriu Munteanu (PL), 1.3% for Reghina Apostolova (Shor Party), while 3.4% for other candidates. The poll was conducted by the Association of Sociologists and Demographers of Moldova and was presented on May 7, IPN reports.

Of the respondents who would be able to make a conscious choice, 35.2% would vote for Ion Ceban, 34.6% for Silvia Radu, while 16.8% for Andrei Nastase. 4.8% would vote for Constantin Codreanu, 2.5% for Valeriu Munteanu, while the other candidates would poll less than 2%.

Half of the respondents consider the future mayor general of Chisinau municipality should be rather a technocrat and a good manager and should realize the problems and concerns of the people. 26% think this should be an able politician and should have influence in the political circles. Each fourth surveyed person could not answer this question. 32% of those polled would prefer a man in the post of mayor and only 14% – a woman. Over 48% of the respondents said the gender of the candidate does not matter for them. The others didn’t pronounce on the issue.

Answering the question “Which of the external characteristics are most important for the public image of the future mayor?”, six in ten respondents said this should first of all have the capacity to show that he is honest, 57% said competent, 53% – decided, 47% – educated, 40% – a leader, 32% – a patriot, 31% – balanced, 22% – a good negotiator, 18% – courageous, 16% – a good communicator, 14% – with the spirit of sacrifice, 13% – with a sense of humor,  12% – charismatic, 8% – a visionary, 8% – popular, 4% – other qualities.

Each respondent was asked to name the problems of major importance for Chisinau municipality that the mew mayor should solve first and foremost and what steps this should take to improve the lives of citizens. Among the problems about which the inhabitants of Chisinau municipality are mostly concerned are the quality of life, poverty, social differentiation, poor quality of roads, defective local management and corruption of functionaries.

The poll was carried out in Chisinau during April 21 and May 2 and covered a sample of 1,182 respondents. The margin of sampling error is + 2.8%.
