Mircea Catîrău is the new member of the Central Election Commission (CEC). Parliament on Thursday adopted a draft decision on his appointment as a member of the CEC, IPN reports.
Veronica Rosca, head of the Parliament’s commission on legal affairs, appointments and immunities, said that on April 12, 2024, Alexandr Berlinschii stopped being a CEC member. Subsequently, the parliamentary group of the Party of Action and Solidarity proposed Mircea Catîrău for this post.
Mircea Catîrău graduated from “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași and has experience of working in the public service. He served at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development and at the Ministry of Finance, where, until now, he worked as the deputy head of the Public Policy Coordination Department.
The new CEC member shall be appointed until the expiry of the Commission’s term of office. “The legal norms applicable to the appointment of a CEC member provide that 8 out of 9 members of the Commission are appointed by Parliament in compliance with the proportional representation of the majority and the opposition,” stated Veronica Rosca.
When he announced his resignation, Alexandr Berlinschii invoked reasons related to his private life.
