The Central Election Commission is asking all the state entities involved in producing population statistics, including local authorities and state registration offices, to intensify their data updating efforts. Also, the electoral authority is inviting all the eligible voters to check their personal data in the Electoral Register, which is available on the CEC’s website.

This comes in reaction to recent criticism that the total number of voters in the Electoral Register is inflated when compared to the total number of population.

CEC chairperson Alina Russu explained at a press briefing on this occasion that the number of 3,237,032 included in Electoral Register represents all the Moldovan nationals with the right to vote, as counted on August 22. Meanwhile, the basic electoral rolls contain 2,800,827 voters. This is because they only include voters currently residing in all the electoral constituencies, and do not account for the Moldovan nationals not currently residing in the country as well as for the Moldovans residing in Transnistria.

At the same time, the Electoral Register draws its data from the Population Register, and the accuracy of the data depends on how expedite the process of updating the latter Register is, explained Alina Russu.
