The lights on the Christmas Tree were switched on on December 1 while Cleopatra Stratan was singing a carol in company with Dragos Boboc, the two-year-old son of Valeriu Boboc who died after the April violent events. Surrounded by dozens of children, the fir tree decorated with tinsel, lights and colorful ornaments started to shine in the Great National Assembly Square, with folk groups performing on the stage in front of the Government, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“We want that starting with this year, the Christmas Tree be lit on December 1, on the first winter day,” said Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca, adding that this is tradition in many European countries. “Maybe many of the Chisinau residents are surprised that we turned on the lights so early, but they probably do not know that this is common practice in Europe.”
Dorin Chirtoaca wished all the inhabitants of Chisinau happy holidays. “We must celebrate Christmas and New Year in peace and harmony so that the coming year brings us joy and welfare.”
The Christmas Tree is about 20 meters in height. It was brought to the Great National Assembly Square from Soroca.
