A number of 41,948 persons died in Moldova last year, down 2.6% (1,102 persons) compared with a year earlier. The general death rate was 11.8 deaths per 1,000 people, as against 12.0 in 2007, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting the National Bureau of Statistics.
As in the previous years, the diseases of the circulatory system caused 56.0% of the deaths, tumors -13.4%, diseases of the digestive system – 9.6%, accidents, intoxications and traumas – 8.5%, diseases of the respiratory system – 5.9%.
The death rate among men by causes of death differs from the death rate among women. The male supermortality was 3.3 times higher for accidents, intoxications and traumas, two times higher for the diseases of the respiratory apparatus and 1.2 times higher for tumors. The female supermortality was 1.4 times higher only in the case of diseases of the circulatory apparatus.
The general mortality by causes of death differs significantly by areas. The deaths caused by diseases of the circulatory apparatuses were larger in number in Donduseni, Briceni, Edinet and Floresti districts, by tumors – in Donduseni, Floresti, Ocnita districts and Balti municipality, by diseases of the digestive apparatus – in Straseni, Falesti, Basarabeasca and Hancesti district. The highest number of deaths caused by external factors was recorded in the districts of Donduseni, Drochia, Briceni and Rascani.
