The Civic Coalition for Free and Fair Elections, the National Platform of the Eastern Partnership Civil Soviet Forum and other associate nongovernmental organizations express their profound concern about the fact that the judiciary in Moldova is politically controlled and is used as an instrument against the public interest. In a public statement, the signatories express their consternation with the erosion of democracy in the Republic of Moldova, were the people’s basic right to form the elective bodies of the public power is violated, IPN reports.

The NGOs reiterate their disagreement with the motivation and arguments invoked by the courts of law for invalidating the vote of over 240,000 citizens of Chisinau municipality or about 40% of the electors in the municipality who chose their legitimate mayor. They underline the relevance of ensuring the legality and legitimacy of the political power and, implicitly, the right to govern based on the people’s will expressed in periodic and veritable elections, and also the common responsibility of the authorities, voters and the political forces in building and strengthening the democratic institutions. The NGOs call on all the political forces of the country and on the development partners to make use of all the legal ways and defend the rule of law in Moldova.

The Civic Coalition for Free and Fair Elections is a permanent, voluntary union that consists of 35 public organizations of Moldova. Its goal is to contribute to the development of democracy by promoting and holding free and fair elections in accordance with the standards of the ODIHR (OSCE), the Council of Europe and the specialized institutions affiliated to this.

The National Platform of the Eastern Partnership Civil Soviet Forum is an informal network of nongovernmental organizations created within the Eastern Partnership Civil Soviet Forum. It consists of five working groups focused on different areas. A number of 85 Moldovan civil society organizations  form now part of the Platform.
