The word “handicapped” with reference to men and women in Articles 50 and 51 of the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova will be replaced with “disabled”. The Constitutional Court on April 10 endorsed a legislative initiative to amend the supreme law submitted by a group of MPs, IPN reports.

According to the application filed to the Constitutional Court, the goal of the amendment is to ensure and promote conditions of equality in the exercise of the rights and fundamental freedoms of the persons with disabilities and to protect their dignity.

The legislative initiative was formulated based on the report presented by the people’s ombudsperson and on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which says it is essential to prohibit all discrimination on the basis of disability and guarantee to persons with disabilities equal and effective legal protection against discrimination on all grounds.
