The corn was affected by drought in a proportion of 70-100%, while sunflower – in a proportion of 60-80%, ascertained scientific researchers of the National Center for Research and Production of Seed Material and the Institute of Pedology, Agrochemistry and Soil Protection “Nicolae Dimo”, who visited eight fields with these crops in Taraclia, Cahul and Cantemir, IPN reports.

In a press briefing, Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Vladimir Bolea said that the reasons that led to the damage to the crops, mentioned by the scientific researchers, are related to soil drought, atmospheric drought, excessively high temperatures and low humidity, as well as night temperatures of over +25 degrees Celsius.

The minister noted that both of the institutions in two weeks are to come up with a program of very clear recommendations on how farmers should get ready to face climate change. In this connection, a cycle of consultations will be held in August with farmers from the districts of Cantemir, Leova, Cahul, Taraclia, Cimislia, Basarabeasca, Causeni and the Territorial-Administrative Unit of Gagauzia.

Vladimir Bolea urged the farmers affected by drought to prepare the documents that confirm the natural calamity situation, drought, for crops of group II.

At the same time, the Ministry is waiting for centralized data from each district on the state of crops in order to make an overview of the extent of the impact of drought on them.
