A man from Basarabeasca district was sentenced to eight years in jail, while his female partner to seven years behind bars for trafficking in persons. The two forced a man to beg and to give them the collected money. The sentence can be challenged, IPN reports.
According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, in January 2016 the culprits, profiting from the precarious financial situation of a man, recruited this and forced him to beg in a number of intersections in Chisinau, lodging him in an abandoned building in Botanica district. During two weeks, the two obliged the man to give them the money received through begging, threatening and hitting him.
Statistics show that the courts of law last year passed four sentences convicting eight persons who organized begging.
