The political activity in Moldova of ex-President of Romania Traian Basescu in the perspective of the future parliamentary elections depends on the court’s judgment on the legality of President Igor Dodon’s  decree by which the Moldovan nationality was withdrawn from him. Andrei Bivol, lawyer for Traian Basescu, after a hearing oin this case on December 15, said the fact that Traian Basescu was deprived of Moldovan nationality prevents him from taking part in politics in Moldova, IPN reports.

Andrei Bivol said the court questioned the parties. He submitted an application to provide new evidence that appeared in this case. This refers to Igor Dodon’s statements about this case, showing that the nationality was withdrawn from Traian Basescu according to political criteria. “Igor Dodon and Traian Basescu are antagonists on the political arena. We showed that the nationality was withdrawn on the initiative not of the competent authorities, but of the President, immediately after this took office,” stated.

Maxim Lebedinschi, lawyer for the accused, said the adverse party does not have legal arguments to support its position and is trying to politicize this case. The decree was issued based on a legal reason, no matter what the President declared. The nationality was withdrawn because Traian Basescu hid the fact that he was investigated as a suspect when he applied for and received the nationality. “The law bans this. They brought criminal records from Romania, which didn’t show that he was investigated as a suspect, but the Romanian law does not envision the possibility of writing this in the given certificate. After the given problems are solved, he can apply again for nationality,” stated Lebedinschi.

The last statements of the parties will be examined at the next hearing that is yet to be scheduled.
