Criminal cases for arbitrary extraction of minerals from Nistru

The Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) ordered starting two criminal cases over arbitrary extraction of minerals from the Nistru River, near Onitcani village of Criuleni district and Sanatauca village of Floresti district. It was established that a group of people performed illegal activities to extract sand and gravel in the absence of required documents, using specials machinery for extracting minerals from riverbeds, IPN reports.

According to a communiqué of the PGO, on the pretext of cleaning the navigable channel, the group of people in May – September extracted about 10,500 cubic meters of sand and gravel to the value of over 1 million lei, causing thus considerable damage to the state and the environment.

The criminal cases were started over arbitrariness with significant damage and other serious consequences. The culprits face three to eight years in jail.
