Ambassadors and representatives of the Russian, Ukrainian and Bulgarian communities Monday laid flowers at the monument to Stephan the Great in central Chisinau and then went to the bust of Alexandr Pushkin. The event was held as part of the Days of Slavic Writing and Culture in Moldova, which are held the 21sth year, Info-Prim Neo reports. Ukrainian Ambassador to Moldova Serghii Pyrozhkov said the given holiday is designed to keep the Slavic unity, spirit and culture. “In Ukraine, Russia and Bulgaria, this holiday starts on May 24 and is dedicated to Saints Cyril and Methodius, who are considered the founders of the Slavic writing and culture. This event unites all the Slavic peoples that consider they have common cultural roots,” said the ambassador. Valentin Rybitski, a representative of the Russian Center for Science and Culture, said the Days of Slavic Writing and Culture join not only the Slavic peoples of Moldova, but also all the Moldovans, as the majority nation is also Orthodox. “This holiday is important for the Moldovan people as well because we belong to the same religion. Orthodoxy is the religion of most of the Slavic peoples. The faith makes us more tolerant and amiable. The Moldovans know the Slavic culture very well, especially the language,”said Valentin Rybitski. Elena Beleakova, director general of the Interethnic Relations Bureau, told the reporters that a number of festive events, Olympiads, trips, exhibitions of paintings made by Slavic people, book launches and concerts will take place this week. The Days of Slavic Writing and Culture will be officially opened at the National Opera House on May 23. Elena Beleakova said the event is organized by the Interethnic Relations Bureau in concert with Slavic ethnocultural organizations working in Moldova.
