The number of deaths caused by COVID-19 last week was the highest so far. Forty-five persons lost the battle with the disease. The death toll now stands at 317. As many as 274 patients are in a serious state and on June 4 the number of infections exceeded 9,000, together with those recorded in the Transnistrian region, National Public Health Agency director Nicolae Furtună was quoted by IPN as saying in a news conference staged by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection.

Nicolae Furtună noted that almost 60% of those infected got cured. The active cases total 3,461. Soroca district was the worst hit, being followed by Ştefan-Vodă and the municipality of Bălţi. The number of infections in Bălţi during the last seven days rose by over 40%.

The incubation period remains five-six days on average. The contagion rate rose from under 1 to 1.2. The average age of the infected persons is 47. This is declining due to the sporadic cases of infection among children, who came into contact with infected parents. Among those infected, the women prevail over men. The urban areas were more seriously stricken.

The average age of those who died was 67. 99% of them suffered from at least one disease and 81% were put on a ventilator.

The infected healthcare workers, including those form the Transnistrian region, total 1,713. The infection rate among doctors rose to 4.3%. The healthcare workers continue to be tested massively. During the last seven days alone, 577 health system employees tested positive for the virus. The number of deaths among healthcare workers increased to 18.

Asked why none of the epidemiologists asked not to relax the restrictions given that the number of infections goes up, Nicolae Furtună said he regrets that the epidemiologists’ message wasn’t heard as they always maintained that it is too early to relax the measures. It is regrettable that the people didn’t learn the lesson after two months of self-isolation.

Minister of Health, Labor and Social Protection Viorica Dumbrăveanu said the plan for adjusting the restrictive measures was designed taking into account the risk level and the circumstances in which the adjustments take place, with well-defined rules. Any adjustment measure and any resumed economic activity were accepted on condition that the recommendations formulated by the epidemiologists are followed.
