Both the defense and the prosecution appealed the judgment by which the doctor accused of raping a number of female patients of the Balti Psychoneurological Hospital was sentenced to 13 years behind bars two weeks ago. Balti prosecutor Viorel Tureac has told IPN that the prosecution considers the punishment imposed by the ordinary court of law is too mild and asks 15 years in jail for the doctor.

The doctor was banned from leaving the town and will not be jailed until an irrevocable judgment is passed. Viorel Tureac said the defender behaved well and was present at all the hearings. That’s why they will not ask to place him under arrest. The man is a pensioner and no longer works in the health system.

The convicted doctor pleads not guilty. The press reported that he declared he could not commit the rapes because he was impotent. The case became known in 2013, when a patient informed her relatives that she was raped by the doctor. Sixteen female patients are involved in this case.
