The defense of former Prime Minister Vlad Filat considers the decision to reject the appeals in the case of Filat taken by the judges of the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ) is illegal and inequitable. The lawyers said they will go to the European Court of Human Rights, IPN reports.
“The judges’ decision is nothing but public execution of Vlad Filat, which shows once again that this is a political case started by order. Vlad Filat didn’t enjoy a fair trial. We presume that the judges allowed to be involved in political games and didn’t follow the letter of the law. In this loud case, the judges showed how justice shouldn’t be administered,” the lawyers say in a press release.
According to the lawyers, the list of judges loyal to the system was extended by three persons namely on February 22. The SCJ missed the historical chance of putting right the serious mistakes made in the case of Vlad Filat and left a spot on the face of Moldovan justice.
The Supreme Court of Justice on February 22 declared as inadmissible the appeals filed by the lawyers for ex-Premier Vlad Filat as evidently groundless.
Vlad Filat was arrested after businessman Ilan Shor made self-denouncing statements, saying he offered money, goods and services to the value of US$250 million to Filat, when this held office as Prime Minister, in favor of governmental favors. By the decision of the Buiucani Court of June 27, Vlad Filat was sentenced to nine years in jail and fined 60,000 lei. A part of his property, worth 791 million lei, was confiscated. Vlad Filat pleaded not guilty.
