The Government of Denmark decided to provide an additional sum of €2.6 million to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), including for activities in the Republic of Moldova, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Denmark Jeppe Kofod, who is in Moldova on a visit, announced in a news conference.

The minister said that he travelled to Palanca and saw himself the despair prevailing on the border. He saw people holding small children in their arms waiting to cross Moldova’s border and saw that Moldova welcomes them warmly. Denmark continues its efforts, together with the whole world, to stop the war in Ukraine, and imposes harsh sanctions. The sanctions are not yet over and Denmark will not give up until the Russian Federation remains on the territory of Ukraine.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Nicu Popescu approved of the solidarity and support of Denmark for Moldova and the Ukrainian refugees. According to him, Denmark co-participated in the efforts to strengthen Moldova’s capacities to accept refugees, including by donations made through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

Moldova banks on Denmark’s assistance in coming closer to the EU. “The positive signal received yesterday from the Council in Versailles is a step forward in the Republic of Moldova’s European integration course. The effort to join the EU depends on our capacity to continue the reforms,” said the Moldovan official.

As from February 24, about 309,000 refugees from Ukraine entered the Republic of Moldova. Out of them, 131,000 refugees, 47,000 of whom are minors, stopped in Moldova. According to Nicu Popescu, Moldova will continue helping the refugees and in this process counts on the support of the partners, including Denmark. The official noted that Moldova’s integration into the EU is the best way for ensuring peace, freedom and democracy in Moldova.
