The British Government’s Department for International Development (DFID) decided to close its program in Moldova on March 31, 2011. Although DFID activities are ending, this is not the end of the UK's involvement or support. In the coming years, the UK will continue to support Moldova’s development and progress with EU integration through the British Embassy in Chisinau, the Embassy informs in a communique, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. Funding will continue to come through the EU and other multilateral agencies. Some 15% of the money the EU spends in Moldova is from the UK. The DFID started work in the Republic of Moldova in 1994. Between 1994 and the end of the DFID program in 2011, nearly £35 million of UK aid have been allocated to Moldova. The annual bilateral program continually increased during the last few years, building up from £1 million in 1999 to around £4 per annum in 2009. Over seventeen years DFID has supported the implementation of Moldova’s strategic priorities, as set in country’s national development documents, in such areas as the public administration reform; public finance management; social protection; regional and business development; social statistics; peace building and conflict resolution.
