There are divergent opinions as to the status that the future minister of defense should have. The Democrats consider a non-military minister is a better variant for the Ministry of Defense, while the Socialists believe this should be from the system and should have a military rank. The opinions were stated in the talk show “Key issue” on NTV Moldova channel, IPN reports.
According to Democratic MP Sergiu Sarbu, a non-military minister will ensure a better balance inside the institution. The general staff is always led by a military professional and a good duo could be created with a non-military minister. Such a practice is met in other states. “The minister is the manager who develops policies, initiatives and strategies. The minister does not manage the army directly. This is conducted by the general staff,” he stated.
Socialist MP Bogdan Tardea noted that Igor Dodon proposed a person with military experience for minister of defense because, being the supreme commander of the army, the President is responsible for state security. “The Government wants to also withdraw the position of supreme commander from the President,” he said.
President Igor Dodon refused two times the candidate for minister proposed by the ruling alliance - Eugen Sturza of the European People’s Party of Moldova - and suggested General Victor Gaiciuc for this post.
