The Dignity and Truth Platform has warned Moldova’s development partners and the diplomatic missions in Chisinau that the parliamentary elections on October 30 might be rigged when voter lists are prepared and ballot papers printed. The platform representatives sent a statement to the EU Delegation in Moldova, to several embassies, to OSCE, the IMF, as well as the Parliament, the government, the Central Electoral Commission, the Prosecutor General’s Office and the National Anticorruption Center, IPN reports.
“The proof that our fears are grounded came from the Central Electoral Commission itself, which announced that there are 3,237,032 people in the National Registry of Voters as of August 22, 2016. According to CEC logic, the number of voters is constantly growing. In 2005, we had 2.3 million voters, in 2014 – 2.8 million and now we have 3.2 million. This is while emigration is growing and 106 Moldovans leave the country every day, according to the UN”, reads the statement.
According to the petition, independent experts estimate the number of people actually living in Moldova at the moment to be 2.5 million. “As such, the real number of voters is about 2 million. This shows there is a difference of 1 million people between this figure and the ‘official’ CEC data”, claim the authors.
The call on the OSCE and other international organizations and development partners to put pressure on the government to prevent the rigging of the presidential ballot.
