Prosecutors and anticorruption officers arrested the director of the College of Winemaking and Winegrowing of Chisinau on suspicion of involvement in the attempt to illegally sell over 30 hectares of land in Stauceni commune, which belongs to the institution. According to the statements of witnesses and collected evidence, the functionary received 660,000 lei from an accomplice for endorsing the project to parcel out the land that is 38 hectares in area into 32 lots. After being divided into lots, the land was to be sold, IPN reports.

According to the National Anticorruption Center, 12 persons, including current functionaries, entrepreneurs, jurists and lawyers, were arrested in this case several weeks ago. They are accused of employing a scheme with the attempt of selling the over 30 hectares that belong to the College of Winemaking and Winegrowing. The suspects rented the land for a period of 30 years and then, changing its purpose, tried to parcel it out and sell it to third persons. To obtain favorable decisions for achieving their goals, these bribed different functionaries.

The prosecutors started a number of criminal cases over swindle, passive corruption, active corruption, traffic of influence and falsification of public documents. These offenses carry penalties of up to 10 years’ imprisonment.
