Doctor arrested on abuse of power charges

A doctor of the Cantemir Health Center was arrested by officers of the National Anticorruption Center for abuse of power. The radiographer is suspected of asking money from patients and of not indicating it in the accounting records of the institution. Almost 200,000 lei in different currencies was found during searches at the doctor’s office and home and in his car, IPN reports.

According to the Center, the doctor implemented a scheme to collect money from patients who were served without appointments. For his services, the radiographer asked sums of money that he didn’t transfer to the Health Center’s pay office. Over 12,000 lei was found in the doctor’s office. In his car, there was found a sum of 14,000 lei, while in his home – almost 50,000 lei, €6,500 and US$ 400. The money was seized to determine their origin.

The doctor was detained for 72 hours. If he is found guilty, he will be fined 67,500 to 117,500 lei or will be jailed for two to six years, in both of the case with ban on holding particular posts or performing particular activities for a period of five to ten years.

The National Anticorruption Center noted that 40 employees of the healthcare sector were investigated for acts of corruption during the first nine months of this year.
