The Liberal Party is exerting political pressure on courts in an attempt to compromise “the triumph of justice”, declared Communist MP Igor Dodon in a press statement.
“We hope that the courts will do their job and will adopt the only legally correct decision and will annul the outcome of the second round of elections for Chisinau Mayor,” declared the former mayoral hopeful.
Dodon further says that the Liberals are afraid of repeat elections because they understand that it will be difficult for them to employ the same instruments to “rig the elections”.
“We know that currently two amendments are proposed which aim, firstly, to abolish the post of chairman of the Chisinau Municipal Council, where the Communist Party has won the majority, and, secondly, to increase the time frame for organizing elections from two weeks to three months. In this way, in the event of a third round, the Liberals are preparing the ground for keeping as much as possible the reigns of the City Hall, for the purpose of accumulating the political and administrative capital needed in an election campaign.
“What has been happening in the last few weeks is but an interference in the judicial affairs by the representatives of the European Integration Alliance, an attempt to change the rules in the middle of game. Regretfully, the Liberals unashamedly use administrative levers and political resources to promote their narrow party interests to the detriment of the law, democracy and common sense”, says Igor Dodon in his statement.
On June 23, Dorin Chirtoaca was proclaimed by a district court a legally re-elected Mayor of Chisinau, but the Communist Party appealed. Later, the Communists petitioned the Supreme Court to reassign their claim to a different appellate court than the Chisinau Court of Appeals. The petition accepted, the Balti Court of Appeals is to hear the case on Friday, July 8.
