Dorin Chirtoaca: If we continue spaying one dog a day, we'll be done in a thousand years

Since mid-July when the campaign started, 45 stray dogs have been sterilized, that is, 5 dogs a week – “Autosalubritate” chief Tudor Maniv told an ordinary City Hall meeting on Tuesday, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to him, the campaign encounters a host of difficulties. “We catch the dogs and then we take them to the association Laika (an animal rights association that offered to sterilize stray dogs – editor's note) or to Ms. Valentina Dudnic (the president of the association – e.n.), but they are incapable of sterilizing them so they let the dogs go”, said Maniv. “We have signed an agreement with a specialized firm which will provide us with the necessary implements to catch the dogs and then we'll be up to other measures”, he added. “So when exactly will we get to sterilize all the dogs in Chisinau – if they don't multiply, of course –, in a thousand years? ”, Mayor Chirtoaca asked rhetorically. He instructed Tudor Maniv and other relevant officials to identify funds from other sources “for a serious stray dog sterilization project”. The stray dog problem returned to the municipal agenda after the head of the city's education department, Tatiana Nagnibeda-Tverdohleb, warned the City Hall officials that packs of angry stray dogs walking around educational establishments pose a threat to the children.
